Mexico’s Chamber of Deputies President Visits Peking University, Eyes Stronger Ties in Education and Innovation

Peking University, May 26, 2025: Sergio Gutiérrez Luna, President of Mexico’s Chamber of Deputies, led a high-level delegation to Peking University on May 20, underscoring growing educational and technological ties between China and Mexico. The visit was part of a broader push to deepen cooperation between the two nations, particularly in academic and research sectors.

The delegation was received by He Guangcai, Chair of the Peking University Council, alongside, Fang Fang, Vice President of PKU, at the historic Linhu Xuan. Also accompanying the visit was Liu Zhenfang, a member of the Environment Protection and Resources Conservation Committee of China’s National People’s Congress.

Welcoming the delegation, He Guangcai highlighted the significance of the visit against the backdrop of President Xi Jinping’s keynote address at the Fourth Ministerial Meeting of the China-CELAC Forum. 

Noting the close relationship between China and Mexico and their fruitful cooperation, He Guangcai affirmed PKU’s commitment to collaboration with its Mexican counterparts in research and education. He then expressed an expectation that both sides faithfully implement the consensus reached by the two heads of state as part of efforts to deepen the bilateral relationship. 

Gutiérrez expressed appreciation for the warm reception and reflected on his past visits to China, praising the country’s remarkable achievements. 
Emphasizing that China and Mexico share a deep bond as two ancient civilizations despite being geographically distant from each other, Gutiérrez expressed hope to deepen cooperation with Peking University in science, technology, and education.

In the afternoon, the delegation visited the National School of Development at PKU, where they participated in a roundtable discussion on China’s modernization. The dialogue, chaired by Lei Xiaoyan, PKU Boya Chair Professor, brought together experts to discuss sustainable development, technological innovation, economic cooperation, and environmental governance.

Joining President Gutiérrez were his wife, Diana Barrera, and Cristal Pelayo Rodríguez, General Director of the Unit of International Affairs and Parliamentary Relations of the Chamber of Deputies. Representatives from various PKU departments and administrative offices also attended the discussions.

The visit reflects the shared commitment of both nations to expanding academic partnerships and driving forward the China-Mexico comprehensive strategic partnership.
