Peking University, Beijing, May 24, 2010: Mariam Khan, vice-representative of United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) in China, Song Wenzhen, director of the National Working Committee on Children and Women under the State Council (NWCCW), and Hu Daohua, vice director of NWCCW, visited the PKU Institute of Population Research (IPRPKU), namely World Health Organization Collaborating Centre on Reproductive Health and Population Science, to discuss the cooperation plan on promoting healthy adolescent reproduction in China on May 21st. Prof. Zheng Xiaoying, director of the PKU Institute of Population Research and WHO Collaborating Centre, Prof. Song Xinming, executive director of the China Health and Development of Population Center, Prof. Hu Yukun, director of the China-Australia Center attended the discussion on behalf of PKU. The representatives exchanged ideas on the research frame, standard, and the prior development fields on the reproductive health of adolescents, and made work plans on it for the present and for the future respectively.
The first report conference on reproductive health of China’s adolescents held by the National Working Committee on Children and Women under the State Council, United Nations Population Fund, and PKU Institute of Population Research, took place at Pecking University on May 4th, 2010. The report conference and the research results produced an immediate reaction both at home and abroad. Many media including CCTV, Xinhua News Agency, and People’s Daily all made further detailed and continuous reports on it.
With the rapid development of China, the change of social values, as well as an earlier age of the onset of puberty and the deferring of the age at first marriage, the demand for information and service on sex and reproductive health of unmarried adolescents in China is fast growing. Therefore, NWCCW and UNFPA has entrusted IPRPKU to set up a two-year research project on the “Reproductive Health of China’s Adolescents”, which is the first nationwide project that has been aimed at reproductive health of adolescents, including adolescents who are attending school, staying at home and those in between. The results of the project will show the general state of reproductive health of 164 million adolescents between the ages of fifteen and twenty-four, which is of great significance for understanding the present situation of adolescent reproductive health and thus improving the formation of future relating policies and services.
The NWCCW and UNFPA are very satisfied with the previous research done by IPRPKU, and will give more support on the project to promote the progress of the scientific research and policies in this field.
