Peking University,Beijing,September 16, 2010: On 9 September 2010, the report-back meeting on preparations for Beijing Forum 2010 was held at Linhuxuan, Peking University.
PKU Vice President Liu Wei paid high compliment on the international academic value of Beijing Forum, and praised the considerable efforts paid by all the staff and the efficient and effective working system set up over the last six years. He pointed out that Beijing Forum, backed up by the disciplinary advantages and academic strength of PKU, should serve to achieve the goal of making PKU into a world-class university and to the next ten-year national plan of education, and thus become a stage for the academic exchanges between PKU and other universities from abroad. At the same time, he emphasized that the academic exchanges at Beijing Forum ought to reflect the high academic standard of PKU, and embody the inclusive academic atmosphere of PKU and improve our academic subjects.
Chi Huisheng, Vice Chairman of PKU Council, thought highly of the three features of comprehensiveness, expansion and innovation conveyed by Beijing Forum 2010. Firstly, comprehensiveness, refers to the combination of arts and sciences. The 2010 forum sets up two sub-sessions, one on “Establishing a Harmonious World” and the other on “Global Environment Issues”, which integrates more scientific elements into the topics of the forum. Secondly, expansion. Beijing Forum 2010 held many significant academic activities this year, which tremendously enriched academic contents, and extended the influence of the forum, such as the dialogue between Homi Bhabha and Prof. Du Weimin at PKU, Noam Chomsky’s lecture at PKU and so on. Thirdly, innovation. This forum will for the first time set up a sub-session especially for youths and invite outstanding students from all over the world to take part in the discussion about considerable global issues, and thus pass on Beijing Forum’s idea of pursuing “Harmonious Civilization”. Vice Chairman Chi was also complimentary about the sub-session on “Belief and Responsibility----Spiritual Reflection in Era of Globalization” jointly held by PKU, Yale University, and Tony Blair Faith Foundation, and he was confident of the success in these academic activities.
Li Yanson, Vice President of PKU, summarized the meeting and gave essential instructions on the following preparations. In the first place, he praised the progress already made by the forum, and pointed out that due to its exploration and development in the last several years, Beijing Forum had ascertained its target, that is, becoming an international and influential forum that can at the same time contribute to the development of Beijing and the construction of disciplines of PKU. Also, he stressed that Beijing Forum 2010 was at hand and at present in the key period of the preparation, so all the staff of the forum should reflect on previous experience and make full preparation for the forum and arrange everything in order, especially the several new activities like sub-session for young students which needs more attention and efforts, in order to make a characteristic and splendid forum.
