Peking University, Apr. 17, 2011: Yevhen Sulima, deputy minister of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, visited Peking University (PKU) on the morning of April 8 together with his delegation. He believed that experts in the bilingual translation would come into being from PKU.
Professor Li Yansong, vice president of PKU, received the guests at the Luce Pavilion. He introduced the general situation of the historical evolution, the disciplines construction, and the international exchanges of PKU. Since its early time, PKU has the tenet of learning from the advanced countries. After decades of discipline construction, PKU has grown into a comprehensive university with multiple disciplines from the previous one focusing on literal arts, social sciences, adn natural sciences. At the same time, PKU has always been stressing on the international exchange and cooperation.
Deputy Minister Yevhen Sulima pointed out that the close exchange between PKU and the former Soviet Union during the 1950s and 1960s indicated the existing tradition of communication between the universities in China and Ukraine. That tradition has given a good foundation for the cooperation of Ukrainian and Chinese Universities and can promote the further bilateral cooperation in the 21st century, which he believed could bring win-win situation in education and science domain to both countries. Deputy Minister Yevhen Sulima also felt pleased with the Ukrainian language courses given specially at PKU, and believed that experts in the bilingual translation would come into being from PKU. He said that the Chinese language education had become more and more important in Ukraine recently while three Confucius institutes has been established and one more was under construction. Deputy Minister Yevhen Sulima hoped that the exchanges between the two countries can be improved by the communication in language disciplines.
Deputy Minister Yevhen Sulima offered the leaders of PKU an invitation to visit Ukraine and signed cooperation agreement among PKU, the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, and the V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University. Professor Li Yansong said there was still a space of collaboration existing between PKU and universities in Ukraine and the forms of cooperation could be of different kinds. He also invited the presidents of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and the V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University respectively to attend the Beijing Forum in November this year.
At the end of the visit, Deputy Minister Yevhen Sulima and Professor Li Yansong exchanged souvenirs with each other and took photos at the Luce Pavilion.
