Peking University, Apr. 1, 2011: A delegation from the University of Notre Dame (ND) led by Thomas Burish, provost of the ND, visited Peking University (PKU) on March 29th. Professor Zhou Qifeng, President of PKU, accompanied by Xia Hongwei, director of the Office of International Relations, received them at Linhuxuan.

The purpose of the visit by Provost Thomas Burish was to discuss future collaboration between the two universities. Provost Burish expressed his gratitude on behalf of the 10 to 15 students now studying at PKU, and explained that his desire to enhance cooperation is based on mutual interests. “Our goal is to increase the percentage of foreign students at PKU from 8% to 20% as soon as possible,” said Professor Zhou. “Hopefully, we can reach this goal in the near future with your help.” Moreover, he expressed another goal, to send more PKU students and faculty members abroad by implementing more exchange programs. Because PKU faces greater financial restrictions when compared to universities in the United States.

Professor Burish praised PKU for its achievements in many fields, including the humanities, philosophy, and business. He stated his wish to bring together talented youth from both universities by launching a joint institution. “We select students with potential leadership,” said Provost Thomas Burish, “to teach them both skills and a sense of values that will enable them to see the world in a new light.”

At the end of the visit, Mo Shujun, international affairs chief at the Guanghua School of Management, exchanged ideas with Roger Huang, vice dean of the Business School at ND, expressing his wish to enhance future cooperation.
