Hall, an international master in Statistics, paid a visit to PKU from Mar. 13 to Mar. 23, during which he offered a four-day course titled ”Methodology and Theory for the Bootstrap.” The course begins by discussing the motivation and intuition behind bootstrap methods, and treats a variety of different approaches, including the double bootstrap. Mathematical arguments based on Edgeworth expansions is then introduced to assess the performance of the bootstrap, and in particular to compare different approaches. The course also addresses the following topics: bootstrap methods for time series, the m-out-of-n bootstrap, and bootstrap methods for nonparametric curve estimation. Dr. Peter G. Hall is a professor of both the University of Melbourne and the University of California, Davis, lecturing statistics. Besides, he is a fellow of the Royal Society and a fellow of the Australian Academy of Science. He is a most productive scholar, making very substantial and important contributions to nonparametric statistics, in particular for curve estimation and resampling: the bootstrap method, smoothing, density estimation, and bandwidth selection. He has worked on numerous applications across fields of economics, engineering, physical science and biological science. Currently he is also an international consultant at the Center for Statistical Science, PKU. The course was held in the lecture hall of Beijing International Center for Mathematical Research at PKU on Mar. 16, 18, 20 and 22, from 9 to 11 a.m. and 2 to 4 p.m. each day. The course attracted many students and scholars in related fields in China, including those from Chinese Academy of Sciences, Renmin University of China, Nankai University, Wuhan University besides PKU. The event was highly anticipated and well received. Reference: Written by: BaiBing
