Peking University, Beijing, May 12th, 2009: On the morning of April 23rd, IEEE Pacific Visualization Symposium 2009 was successfully concluded in Overseas Exchange Center of Peking University (PKU). This symposium is one of the specialized international symposiums on visualization held in China for the first time. Prof. Zhao Qinping of Beijing University of Aeronautics & Astronautics and Prof. Cha Hongbin of PKU chaired the symposium.
The symposium attracted researchers from nearly 20 countries and regions, such as the USA, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Israel, Japan, Australia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, and the mainland of China. Several famous experts on visualization also presented, including Prof. Thomas Ertl, Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (TVCG) & Vice President of the Eurographics Association, and Prof. Kwan-Liu Ma, world famous visualization expert who won the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE).
Prof. Jarke van Wijk of the Netherland Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, who received the IEEE Visualization Technical Achievement Award in 2007, delivered an excellent keynote speech entitled “Knots, Maps, and Tiles: Three Visual Puzzles”. Prof. Tang Zesheng of Macao University of Science and Technology, pioneer in the field of visualization of China, were invited to gave a report on the visualization of Chang'e Lunar Exploration Program data. In addition, Prof. Alfred Inselberg, inventor of the information visualization based on parallel coordinates, Prof. Jim Thomas, Director of the National Visualization and Analytics Center, the USA, and Prof. David Ebert, Director of Purdue University Regional Visualization and Analytics Center made speeches on the visual analysis, the visualization of multi-dimensional data, and the human-computer interaction in visualization in the Tutorial session.
On the afternoon of the same day, 2009 Workshop on Visualization Applications was held. The aim of the workshop was to promote the communication on the research and application of the visualization, and the development of related work. Authors of eight long papers, as well as authors of short papers, gave reports in the workshop. In the ensuing open discussion, Prof. Kwan-Liu Ma and Prof. Han-Wei Shen communicated with participants of China on the connection of visualization research and application, and the developing direction of the visualization. They reached agreement in the end. The experts from China have been encouraged by the prospect of the visualization development in China.
The visualization is a novel research field. The rapid development of our country’s technology and economy urgently requires proper tools to visually analyze and interpret data through the visualization research. It has become very important in the development of complex systems, such as the large aircraft which has related to national interests, and geological exploration on oil and gas resources. This international visualization symposium held in China will play a useful role in the research and development of our country’s information and scientific visualization.
The symposium was jointly organized by PKU, Beijing University of Aeronautics & Astronautics, Institute of Computing Technology and Computer Network Information Center of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Institute of Applied Physics and Computational Mathematics. It was undertaken by Key Laboratory of Machine Perception (Minister of Education) of PKU, and was supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China and HP Labs China.
