Peking University, Apr. 28, 2011: The second annual meeting of PKU-UCLA (Peking University and University of California at Los Angeles) Joint Research Institute for Science and Engineering (JRI) was held at Yingjie Overseas Exchange Center at Peking University on April 25.

At the opening ceremony, PKU President Zhou Qifeng and UCLA President Gene Block delivered their opening address respectively. President Zhou appreciated the accomplishments of JRI in the past two years in terms of academic cooperation and exchange among professors and students, especially the contributions JRI made for the substantial joint work of PKU and UCLA. President Gene Block introduced the recent communication between the two universities, and noted the role JRI plays in offering the bridge for exchanges among the students from the two universities. Gene Block hoped UCLA would continue contributing to the development of internationally top-notch students.

Professor Jason Cong, one of the co-directors of the Institute, introduced the operation of JRI and the future blueprint of the institute. The annual meeting set up four separate forums in the afternoon. Professors and teachers from both PKU and UCLA had a deeper communication in the fields of clean energy, information science and technology, bioscience and preclinical medicine, and translational medicine.
Background:
Established in 1919, UCLA (University of California at Los Angeles) is the cradle of American commerce and high-tech industry. JRI was established on June 16, 2009. PKU President Zhou Qifeng and UCLA President Gene Block signed the cooperation agreement. Professor Li Xiaoming from PKU and Professor Jason Cong from UCLA serve as co-directors of the Institute. JRI aims at improving the academic study and personnel training in the fields of science, technology and medicine.
