After that, Mr. Chu delivered a short speech. Mr. Chu is a Chinese American. In 1997 he won the Nobel Prize in Physics because of his research in cooling and trapping of atoms with laser light, and became the fifth Chinese Nobel Prize winner. He was appointed as United States Secretary of Energy. In his speech he analyzed the reasons for energy scarcity and affirmed the possibility that we can reduce energy consumption by developing technologies and new energy resources. He also encouraged the students with humor. “Doing Research on Energy technology is a best choice if you want to achieve the Nobel Prize,” he said.

After the speech from Mr. Chu, PKU professors and students gave presentations about researches on the energy problems of PKU, new energy resources technologies, energy’s impact on international relationships and students’ activities. Prof. Zhang Dong, Vice Dean of Dept. of Mechanics and Engineering Science, generally reviewed the achievements and prospect of clean energy researches of PKU, and made a thorough introduction of Carbon Capture and Storage technology. He said, “Many colleges in PKU are doing researches on energy problems at present.” Mr. Chu showed great interest in the latest development of energy technologies in China.

Later, Prof. Wu Xiaolei, Vice Dean of Dept. of Mechanics and Engineering Science, Prof. Yu Rongping, special-term researcher and Prof. Wu Kai, Vice Dean of College of Chemistry & Molecular Engineering made presentations named “Research on Renewable Energy” and “Energy Storage and Electronic Cars”. Prof. Wu Xiaolei highlighted solar energy and biological energy. Mr. Chu said, “These new energy resources will develop at a high speed in the following years, and I think the direction of your research is right.” Prof. Zha Daojiong from School of International Studies reviewed the consensus between China and US about energy cooperation and climate change under the title of “interdisciplinary research on clean energy policies”. Mr. Fan Jie, Director of  PKU Institute of Clean Development Mechanism and graduate student of College of Urban and Environmental Sciences, made a introduction about environmental protection and energy saving activities in PKU. Mr. Chu smiled and said, “Students’ actions are always faster. They can encourage their parents to save energy at home.”
