[Beijing 2022 Olympics] Zhao Zehua: Passing the Torch of Chemistry
Feb 05, 2022
Editor’s Note: Hundreds of PKU Winter Olympics volunteers are currently enthusiastically on hand to assist various volunteering jobs. Though from different backgrounds, they are together using their professions making this annul gorgeous international event successful. Let’s check out their most beautiful smiling faces and volunteering stories.

Peking University, February 5, 2022: Zhao Zehua, a volunteer at the dope testing centre, is a sophomore from the College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering, Peking University. Since the beginning of February, Zhao has started his volunteering voyage at the centre, helping out by putting his professional knowledge and skills on chemistry into use; his work is a little different from other volunteer errands, for dope testing only takes place during official contests.

Ever since high school, Zhao has been passionate about chemistry. After winning the gold medal in Chinese Chemistry Olympiad, he entered Peking University and continued his pursuit of knowledge. Throughout his freshman year, Zhao was an unarguable straight-A student with all kinds of scholarships and honour titles.

Zhao has prepared himself on both theoretical and practical level before the opening of Beijing Winter Olympics. During high school, Zhao was deeply impressed by the precision and succinctness of analytical chemistry; out of interest for the subject, he studied analytical chemistry systematically at college and developed further understanding for this subject through lab experiments. In the upcoming semester, Zhao will be the teaching assistant for the course Quantitative Analytical Chemistry.

To him, the core of dope testing is as simple as calculating the exact amount of a certain type of chemical substance, which has close contact to his major. It is the outstanding professional skills that he performed at the interview that makes him a volunteer this year.

Now as a volunteer on duty, Zhao has taken on a stricter standard during experiments and testing so that he would not make any mistake during contest hour. He paid respect to those who can balance between academic life and volunteering; he also mentioned that if conditions permit, he would like to have a talk with the former dope testing volunteers in order to gain more experiences as well as to learn from their brave and selfless dedication for the volunteering work.

Encouraged by his predecessor’s passion, Zhao chose to take the night shift, which means that he will be working from midnight to nine o’clock next day morning for over two months. He is proud to have been the ‘night’s watch’ in this exciting international event. The volunteering experiences this winter will surely be a lifelong memory for him to cherish.
