[Beijing 2022 Olympics] Zhu Fengxue: Let me do it first!
Feb 09, 2022
Peking University, February 9, 2022: Nineteen years ago, Zhu Fengxue rushed to the hospital to fight against
SARS. Seventeen years later, Zhu Fengxue went from Beijing to Wuhan to
battle COVID-19. Now, she’s on her way to the Winter Olympics.
Zhu Fengxue hard at work
As
the medical officer of the Yanqing National Sliding Center, leader of
Peking University People's Hospital Winter Olympics Medical Security
team, deputy director of the Hospital Trauma Center and an experienced
surgeon in Critical Care Medicine and Trauma Care, her top priority has
always been to save as many patients' lives as possible, improve the
admission and cure rates, and to reduce the infection and death rates.
‘I have experience in this field, please let me do it first.’ Zhu
Fengxue has always taken the initiative when it comes to frontline work.
The task for the Winter Olympics is one with great difficulty but Zhu
Fengxue’s sense of responsibility would not allow her to shirk.
Firstly,
luge and bobsleigh events have just taken off in China. As a result,
there is no prior experience that can be followed when it comes to
medical security and emergency rescue. Members of the medical security
team discussed with the doctors and leaders of the national teams and
were constantly analyzing and optimizing the whole process. In addition,
the team practiced the rescue process countless times to ensure that
they were adequately prepared.
In
addition, the track and rescue process are very difficult. The track is
1,975 meters long and features a vertical drop of more than 120 meters,
the equivalent of a 40-story building. At the same time, it is
extremely narrow, making it dangerous for athletes to maneuver and tough
for the rescue team to locate them. In addition, carrying a
100-kilogram athlete off the track with a stretcher while donning
personal protection equipment and crampons is not an easy physical
challenge.
Zhu Fengxue and
her team members are well prepared for Beijing Winter Olympics. Zhu
Fengxue is full of gratitude for her team. The days working together has
made the medical team a happy family. Everyone plays their own roles.
Those who are good at English made English videos to help others to
learn while the head nurse helped to celebrate team members' birthdays.
When
it comes to family, especially her son, Zhu shed tears. "I'm so sorry
for my family. My son is a Grade 8 student. He must be in great need of
my company given that this is an important year for him. But after
serving in Wuhan I started preparing for the Winter Olympics... I
haven't been with him in a long time." Zhu Fengxue's husband is also an
excellent surgeon. He knows the significance of the Winter Olympics and
he made his best to support his wife, taking on the mantle of caring for
their child.
After two
years of training and preparation, Zhu Fengxue is full of confidence
about the Winter Olympics: "We have accumulated rich experience and have
the ability to complete the rescue work successfully. We are ready!"
